Objective 5: Provide seamless dynamic deployment and evolution of HD-services

Summary: This objective includes providing efficient support for dynamic deployment and runtime adaptation of HD-service. In a dynamic environment like the future computing continuum, given the requirements for short innovation and release cycles, it is crucial to allow fully automated deployment and run time adaptation management of the HD-Services. HD-services engineering should be made much more agile.

Challenges: Current platforms supporting dynamic deployment and adaptation often assumes the existence of a common middleware or virtual machine (e.g., Java/OSGi), which is no more the case for HD-services partly relying on resource-constrained devices not even able to run an OS. Upgrading services interacting with the real world often implies re-flashing complete firmwares, which is a risky operation making the device unavailable for a long period of time.

Approach: The HEADS will cover not only the initial deployment of HD-services, but also their continuous evolution and dynamic adaptation. The HEADS will employ cutting edge models@runtime techniques in order to maintain an abstract representation of the running HD-services and allow designers to reason on this abstraction to make decision and evolve the system.


- An open-source models@runtime engine able to maintain a causal connection between HD-service descriptions and artefacts running on the different platforms composing the future computing continuum.
